This system integrates fish tanks and vegetable beds, where nutrient-rich water from tilapia tanks nourishes lettuce and other greens. Additionally, food waste from on-site is composted using black soldier fly larvae, which produce protein-rich feed for the fish, further closing the nutrient loop . This aquaponics setup serves as a dynamic educational platform, offering hands-on experiences in biology, sustainability, and nutrition. Visitors, including students and community members, engage with the system through interactive tours and workshops, fostering a deeper understanding of circular economy principles. By transforming waste into resources and demonstrating sustainable agriculture practices, 100 Gardens at the Innovation Barn plays a pivotal role in promoting environmental stewardship and innovative learning in Charlotte.

Health, Self-sufficiency, and Environmental Stewardship
In partnership with the Catawba Nation, we’re working to support long-term food sovereignty and hands-on education through aquaponics. Together, we’ve developed a custom aquaponics facility that blends modern sustainable farming techniques with the Nation’s commitment to health, self-sufficiency, and environmental stewardship.
This project is designed to:
Expand access to fresh, locally grown food
Offer educational opportunities in science, sustainability, and agriculture
Empower the next generation of Catawba youth with skills rooted in innovation and tradition
